You conduct the study of a new trade, craft, profession, or academic subject. You can learn from a school, apprenticeship, or virtual course. This Story Path represents a time spent gaining a new expertise. This path is for a person who wants to roleplay a character working to learn a new subject.

1st Event: Find a Tutor or Institution

Completion: You complete this event when you find a person or institution willing to teach you the new talents you wish to learn. This could be an individual you apprentice, a formal school that requires an application or tuition (or both), or a virtual course. Your place of learning or mentor must agree to take you on, and you must meet their admission requirements.

Reward: Select one special ability from your Species.

2nd Event: Learn the Lesson the Hard Way

Completion: You complete this event when you learn a valuable lesson that applies to your specific field of study. You pick what this lesson is and let the GM know so they can help create a situation wherein you learn it. For instance, the rule of farming might be, “Get up with the sun.” An agricultural Student might learn this when they sleep in one too many times and their crops start dying.

Reward: Increase the die size of one of your Mental Skills by 1.

3rd Event: All-Nighter

Completion: You complete this event when you make a significant sacrifice for your studies. You might give up an important social outing, gain a negative condition due to lack of taking care of yourself, or have to pay someone else a lot of money to complete a project for you. The sacrifice you make is exceptionally large in a sea of others you make for your studies.

Reward: Increase the die size of one of your Mental Skills by 1.

4th Event: Make Connections

Completion: You complete this event when make a positive connection with an influential person in your field. First you must find a way to get in contact with them; then your encounter should be one memorable enough for you both to pave the way for future communication.

Reward: Increase the die size of one of your Social Skills by 1.

5th Event: Final Exam

Completion: You complete this event after you finish a final test that is set by your tutor or learning institution. This test could be a project, like creating a Laser Sword, or a formal written or performance test. It might also be something practical in the field or an obstacle course or puzzle room that requires you to use your newfound knowledge. Pass or fail, you have gained an enormous amount of experience at the end of this journey.

Reward if you fail: Select one special ability from your Species.

Reward if you pass: Gain the I Know About That special ability. You can select an area of knowledge related to your study that your character knows very well. You automatically succeed on Knowledge skill roll to know about anything within your particular area of knowledge. This area of knowledge should be more specific than the broad heading of a skill and is subject to GM approval.

What follows are a few examples of areas of knowledge: accounting, anatomy, archaeology, architecture, art, astronomy, biology, botany, business, chemistry, communications technology, criminal activity, disease, farming, folklore, high society, law, literature, mining, magic, military, monsters, music, politics, philosophy, pop Culture, religion, security, spacecraft, terrestrial geography, Weapons and defenses, wilderness survival, and zoology.
